Why study social science
Reasons why we need social uced with kind permission from the campaign for social know that britain’s social scientists are world leaders in their fields, but why do we need them? Social scientists help us imagine alternative science can open up debate and give us a say in shaping our collective future. Social science helped people understand the consequences and application of the new technologies of the age, such as steam growth of railways and factories not only transformed the economy and the world of work, but also changed forever the way people organised their family lives and leisure. Today nanotechnology and advances in medical research will have a significant impact on the way we present us with a bewildering range of ethical, legal and social issues. Social science can help us make sense of our science is not just important for the future but for what’s happening now. Social scientists working on behalf of the runnymede trust found that this doesn’t just this depend on where we live, but that black and minority ethnic people are more likely to live in areas where they’re forced to put pressure on banks to ensure we all have access to machines that don’t charge. A range of social scientists – not just economists but also psychologists, sociologists and political scientists, for example ‐ can help us understand the economic crisis and weigh up decisions we make for ourselves and those which governments make on our behalf. Without this kind of analysis we may feel like pawns in a global game of the knowledge and understanding that social science offers us, we will feel empowered to act for ourselves, and to influence decisions being made on our l ageing in europe: explores the gender pension gap across the 28 member states of the european union, plus iceland and norway. Social scientists contribute to our health and well‐ sports sociologists to public health experts, from those interpreting medical statistics to those evaluating policies for our care in old age, social scientists are working hard to make sure that our health, leisure and social care services work to best geographers at the university of sheffield, for example, have shown that those of us who don’t follow eating advice are not simply weak‐willed or ignorant. Social science might save your logists at the university of liverpool spent time in a steel factory to work out what needs doing to create a safer environment. Social science can make your neighbourhood common myth is that if you take measures to reduce crime in one neighbourhood the criminals simply move on, leading to increased crime in another area. We need social scientists as public h society is sometimes said to be anti‐intellectual. Yet in our fast changing world, there is a place for the social scientist as public intellectual. Social scientists have a duty to make their work interesting and engaging to the rest of need to explain not only why social science is relevant but do it in a compelling way. Perhaps more social scientists will have to become active listeners, talking more often to the public, each other and to we can get all the disciplines around the table together. Social science can improve our children’s lives and societies and all governments want to show they are dong the best for children. Social science can change the world for the can generally agree that world needs to be a safer place where all people can enjoy basic dignity and human rights.
Social scientists working in interdisciplinary teams have made their mark in the area of human welfare and are concerned with the social and economic advancement of humanity at large. They work with government institutions, un organisations, social services, funding agencies, and with the are influencing the work of strategists, planners, teachers and programme officers in developing and growing economies, like india, to influence development so that it impacts on the lives of the poorest members of society. For example, social scientists from the delhi school of economics are cooperating with colleagues at soas, university of london to explore the impact of legislation in india to guarantee minimum wages for rural unskilled manual labourers on the loves of found the new law provided opportunities for some women to become wage earners where none had existed before, reducing the risk of hunger and the chances of avoiding hazardous work. But they also identified barriers to women benefitting from the changes, including harassment at the working in development studies are then able to support women’s ability to benefit by looking for creative solutions to such the social sciences matter: provides an illuminating look at topics of concern to everyone at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Social science can broaden your debates about feminism, peace, ecology, social movements, and much more, social science offers each of us new perspectives and new ways of understanding. Whether your idea of relaxation is visiting a museum, watching soaps, or chatting online, social science encourages a fresh look at our everyday activities and scientists at the university of leicester are making an impact on museums across the world, with the goal of making them more inclusive, abler to challenge prejudices, inspire learning and be more relevant in contemporary example is their work with the gallery of modern art in glasgow to involve local communities and international visitors alike in engaging with exhibitions on a range of social justice issues from sectarianism to gay rights, through programmes including arts workshops and l feminism: is a radical and pioneering feminist manifesto for today's modern audience written by one of the cornerstones of today's feminist scene. Space to explore, share and shape the issues facing social in print: big ideas in social science social science we launched social science ‘policy insights from the behavioral and brain sciences’. Study social hed: march 5, d winecoff, himself a political scientist, writes in reaction to my earlier post:This is an opportunity for the social sciences to demonstrate their value by making a clear, coherent argument. I have seen social scientists act like any other interest group: they want public spending on programs that benefit them because those programs benefit them. If the social sciences deserve public funding they ought to be able to make the case on its merits. In a way, cantor is challenging us to think like civically-minded social i responded to him and to a commenter, i think i and others have tried to make an argument that goes beyond “rent-seeking” and, indeed, we’ve tried over and over again. But let me try to engage this question again, and at the broadest possible study social science because social phenomena affect people’s lives in profound ways. If you want to start with cantor’s focus—physical illness and death—then social phenomena are tremendously important. Social ills—poverty, lack of formal education, family dysfunction, ineffective governments, wars—are associated with and arguably cause a great deal of physical illness and death. If social and political scientists can figure out how to help create stable democratic institutions, how to help resolve civil wars, whether and how foreign intervention can help ameliorate conflict, etc.
Then they will help save lives—both on their own and in concert with other scientists who focus on new medicines, or more efficient cookstoves, or new ways to filter drinking water, or what have let’s leave killing and death behind, since much social science isn’t about that. Social phenomena also matter in less dramatic ways, but in ways that still make people’s lives profoundly better or worse. A medical doctor can treat the effects of family dysfunction and divorce—say, with anti-depressants or therapy and so on—but we can learn and know more about how to prevent some of this dysfunction from doing social s. The “hard” sciences and medicine might be able to help a bit here, but these too are mostly questions for social ies. Whether people like or dislike social groups, for example, has an impact on the quality of life for those groups. Whether they are healthy, whether they are prejudiced, whether they can survive natural disasters, and so is just a quick jaunt through some of the foundational topics in sociology, economics, psychology, and other social sciences. I should say that the politics, and therefore political science, is immanent in all of those. Whether they live in poverty, whether they get parental leave when their kids are born, how easy it is to buy a house, how long they sit in traffic, how much tax they pay, how good their health care is, and so on and problem with this laser focus on the hard sciences and on medicine is that it pretends that people’s quality of life simply depends on physical phenomena—how fast computers are or how much their knee hurts and so on. Much of people’s happiness—indeed, including whether they have access to computers or can endure a physical malady—depends on social phenomena. If i wanted to turn the tables, it wouldn’t be hard to find research in medicine and the “hard” sciences that seems much further removed from people’s daily lives—and their actual happiness living those lives—than is much social none of that speaks to trade-offs: why should the government fund social science over, say, medicine? And thus to say that entire fields of study are worth $0 in federal funding but other fields of study are worth millions or billions of dollars reflects very little about the actual or potential real-world impact of those fields’ research programs. Even a more nuanced claim—the marginal impact of every dollar spent on medical research is greater than the marginal impact of every dollar spend on social science—is hard to test. Nor is it clear why the most impact wouldn’t be attained not by doing zero-sum calculations between sprawling and disparate fields like “medicine” and “social science” but by funding only the most promising medical research and only the most promising social science research. Alas, then we’re back to figuring out what is “promising” a these challenges, what the federal government does do and should do is allow its elected leaders to make decisions about how to allocate resources across multiple fields of study—via funding of the nih, nsf, etc. Thus we gain from funding the disciplines that illuminate those the original article and others like it at the political science blog, the monkey related science’s dangerously low profile, and how to fix vocation of sociology – exposing slow staffordshire: a true test for ic inequality and political power (part 1 of 3).
